With the help of our friends at Burundi Friends International, we are so happy to offer this special micro-lot from the Mpanga Washing Station in the northern Kayanza State in Burundi. Mpanga washing station was created in 2008 by the company SEGEC, led by Jean Clément Birabereye, who has over 15 years experience in coffee production as manager of the public sector Sogestar stations. The Mpanga station buys and processes coffee from over 300 smallholder farming families, and has continued to pay above market price for the cherries to encourage high quality production at each harvest.
Nelson had the pleasure of meeting Jean Clément for the first time when Nelson was a judge for the second annual Rwanda Cup of Excellence competition in 2010. Then, after also being a judge at the first-ever Burundi Cup of Excellence competition in 2011, Nelson visited the Mpanga washing station with Jean Clement and learned more about this unique Burundian specialty coffee source.
